This week I’ve decided to go sans pizza (cheese too) so tonight I ate something different. I had my first sloppy joe in many years and it was absolutely wonderful. I never realized how sweet and savory they could be and was thus always unexcited about them. That was until I came across this article/video. Chef John has most assuredly done it again, with a super simple recipe whose ingredients I already had in my kitchen! While this may not seem like a big deal it made quite a difference, and cut the preparation time by 20-30% (That idea came from this article).
Make sure to follow the recipe pretty closely. My deviations were a slightly larger dice of the green pepper (bad), using some sliced whole wheat bread (alright), and toasting the bread (amazing). The smaller the peppers are, the better they incorporate into the dish, but it didn’t make a huge difference. Toasting the bread was wonderful because it soaked up the few remaining juices in the sloppy joe (read the recipe, it’s not supposed to be super saucy) and added a lovely crunch to the whole sandwich.
While it wasn’t super drippy, you can see from the picture of my sandwich that it was still amazingly juicy. The best part about this was that it wasn’t particularly messy to eat.

Check out the video and give it a shot, I’m super excited to have the leftovers!
